What is BSc. Nautical Science?
Nautical Science is a multidisciplinary field includes subjects of science, mathematics and physical training that deals with techniques and knowledge involved in navigating and operating a ship safely from one point to another. It is the study of the balanced combination of theoretical and practical training. The technical and intricals of the work involved in this field can only be excelled and best if one has the right amount of knowledge and experience in the field.
The course includes all the theoretical and practical aspects related to maritime studies. After the successful completion of the course, cadets go on to assume professional capacities in the field, such as Navigation Officer on Merchant Navy ships. Before cadets can assume such roles as Navigating Officer in Merchant Navy ships, they are made to go through compulsory 12 months of long sea service.
The 3- year course program is divided into 6 semesters, each lasting for the period of 6 months. After the completion of the course, students are needed to undergo a year sea service. After completing the sea service and qualifying the subsequent viva- based examination, students are eligible to obtain the next. The certificate enables those graduates to hold the post of Navigation Officer on Merchant Navy ships.

BSc. Nautical Science: Duration
Bachelor of Science in Nautical Science or B.Sc. Nautical Science is an undergraduate (UG) level course program which introduces students to the fundamentals of nautical sciences technology. It is a 3 years course program which is divided into 6 semesters. Every semester lasts for the period of 6 months. The minimum duration is 3 years and the maximum duration is 6 years for Distance learning. For some of the institutes it is 4 years whereas one year is for internship program.
BSc. Nautical Science: Eligibility Criteria
The minimum eligibility criteria of the course requires the students to successfully complete the 10+2 qualification in the science branch with Physics, Math and Chemistry as mandatory subjects, and a minimum aggregate marks of 60%.
Candidates awaiting the final year examination’s results are also eligible to apply to the course.
Along with educational qualification, medical standards are also relevant and important in students’ assessment. The willing students are required to have a 6/6 eyesight, and should not be suffering from vision impediments such as night blindness and color blindness. Students are also required to be physically fit to apply for the course.
