GENERAL INFORMATION FOR IIT JAM 2020
IIT JAM 2020 is open to all Nationals (Indian and Foreigners as well). The IIT JAM 2020 Exam will be held online on 9th February 2020 (i.e. a Sunday) with Computer Based Mode System of Answering.
Foreign nationals are requested to comply with the rules and regulations of the Admitting Institute.
A candidate’s admission is decided on the marks/scores he/she qualified in the Test paper and also on the Minimum Educational Qualification and Eligibility Requirements of the concerned Academic Programme.
Candidates who have appeared or due to appear in the final examination of their qualifying degree in 2020 are eligible to appear in the IIT JAM 2020.
Qualified candidates of IIT JAM 2020 can apply for provisional admission subject to the following:
All parts of their final examination shall be completed at the date of the Admitting Institute and 2) proof of passing the degree with required eligibility and should be submitted by 30th September 2020.
Admissions are purely based on ranks obtained in the IIT JAM 2020.
Any request for change of documentation should be made within 4th May 2020. After the specified date, no requests will be allowed or considered.
Candidates have to be cautioned that mere appearance in the IIT JAM 2020 or being in the merit list does not guarantee any automatic entitlement for admission to the listed institutes.
List of academic programs, seat availability and eligibility criteria and minimum qualifications are subject to change in the brochure as per the policies of the Admitting Institutes.
IIT JAM 2020 Examination Fee
A candidate can appear in either one of the two-Test Papers and so desired candidates must ensure that these test papers are not scheduled in the same session. The fees for appearing in the second Test paper are as under:

TEST PAPER PATTERN
IIT JAM 2020 Entrance Exam has six Test Papers that are posted online. The candidates will have to answer the questions put up on a random basis. The exam time is of 3 hours. The medium for the Exam is in English.
Test Papers would be divided into three sections namely A, B and C. Answering all questions in the three sections is mandatory.
Section A contains 30 questions in the Multiple-Choice Question Format involving 10 questions of one mark each and the remaining 20 questions of two marks each. Candidates can answer the questions by clicking the choices listed.
Section B contains 10 questions in the Multiple-Choice Question Format. The questions carry Two marks each. Candidates can answer the questions by clicking the choices listed. The Candidate has to answer the correct choice making him/her closer to the qualifying stage.
Section C contains 20 Numerical Questions comprising 10 questions of one mark each and 10 questions of two marks each. Kindly note that there are no choices for these set of questions. You will have to use a virtual numerical keypad to answer the questions for which the answer is shown as a signed real number.
Candidates must ensure they answer correctly as no attempts for a question results in a 0 mark. In Section A, wrong answers would have a 1 mark deducted and similarly for all questions answered wrong in Section A. Sections B and C do not have any partial or complete negative marking provisions.
The Candidates need to select the answers for MCQ and MSQ questions using the mouse. The answers for Numerical Questions will be entered through the virtual numeric keypad (for which the keyboard of the computer will be disabled.)
At the 3hour ending time, the computer will automatically terminate the examination. Any use of unfair means detected at the examination hall will lead to cancellation of his/her candidature as well as a disqualification to the candidate from appearing in the IIT JAM in the future.
IIT JAM 2020 Eligibility Criteria
- All candidates admitted through JAM should have a Bachelor’s Degree. While qualifying for the degree, the aggregate marks obtained without rounding off in all subjects should be at least 55% for General and 50% for the SC/St candidates.
- All candidates need to submit a Physical fitness form from a registered medical practitioner as instructed in the form of admission. The candidates would also have to undergo a Physical Fitness Test by a medical board of the Admitting Institute. In case the candidate is found unfit, his/her candidature stands cancelled.
IIT JAM 2020 Admit Card
An Admit Card showing Candidates Name, Registration Number, Photograph, Signature, will be available for download from the JOAPS website from January 7th 2020 until the Examination Date.
Admit Cards will not be sent by email/post and so please check all details before downloading. If any discrepancies arise, please contact the Organizing Chairman, JAM 2020 IIT Kanpur immediately through phone, fax or even through Email.
IIT JAM 2020 Application Procedure
Candidates can apply for JAM 2020 only through JAM Online Application Processing System (JOPAS) The facility for Online Registration and Application will be available through the website https://joaps.iitk.ac.in from September 05, 2019.
A candidate has to first register on JOAPS website, by providing his/her name, a valid E-mail address, a working mobile number and a password. The candidate must give an E-mail address that he/she uses and checks frequently, as all communication to the candidate from JAM 2020 will be sent to this E-mail address.
The candidate must not use somebody else’s E-mail address and only one candidate can be registered with one E-mail address. Similarly, the candidate should provide his/her personal mobile number because most of the communication may also be sent via SMS.
The password that the candidate provides should be chosen such that it cannot be guessed easily by others and this password must not be forgotten by the candidate as he/she will require it to log in to the online application website.
Upon successful registration, an E-mail containing the candidate’s Enrolment ID will be sent to the E-mail address provided by the candidate. The Enrolment ID will also be sent to the mobile number provided by the candidate.
The candidate needs to use this enrolment ID along with the password for all JAM 2020 related communications or website operations. Candidates are advised to keep the ID along with the password information safe and confidential.
JOAPS website provides an online interface to the candidate for interacting with the JAM Administration. With this interface, a candidate can:
- Apply for the examination online.
- Upload photograph, signature and other documents like category certificate (if applicable), PWD certificate (if applicable), etc.
- Pay the application fee through any of the electronic payment modes.
- Check the status of the application form: Received, under scrutiny, Accepted, Defect status, Status after rectification, rejected with valid reasons, Admit card ready for download, etc.
- Download Admit Card.
- View answers, marks and JAM score.
- Download JAM scorecard.
- Submission of application for Admission.
Candidates are discouraged from making the application through a third person. If someone else (friend or Internet café person) is filling the application on behalf of the candidate, the candidate must ensure that the data submitted are correct.
It has been noticed during earlier occasions that the information filled by another person on behalf of the candidate was wrong, as they did not have correct information about the candidate. We, therefore, strongly discourage such practice while filling the online application form.
Necessities for Filling the Application Form
- Personal information (name, date of birth, personal mobile number, parents’ name, parents’ mobile number, etc.). Please note that the name of the candidate in the application form must exactly be the same as per the qualifying degree certificate. JAM 2020 Score Card will be issued as per the name entered in the application form. Prefix/title such as Mr/Shri/Dr/Mrs/Smt, etc. should NOT be used before a name.
- Address for communication (including PIN code).
- Eligibility degree details.
- College name and address with PIN code.
- JAM paper(s).
- Choice of JAM examination cities.
- A high-quality image of the candidate’s photograph conforming to the requirements specified.
- A high-quality image of the candidate’s signature conforming to the requirements specified.
- Scanned copy of the Category (SC/ST) Certificate (if applicable) in pdf format.
- Scanned copy of PwD Certificate (if applicable) in pdf format.
- Details of the valid Identity Document (ID) (This ID proof, in original, should be carried by the candidate to the examination hall).
- Net-banking/debit card/credit card details for fee payment.
The JOAPS allows the candidate to “Enter” the data, “Save” a partially filled form, “Logout”, and “Resume Filling” by logging in again. The JOAPS portal is self-explanatory and user-friendly. Additional help information required in filling various fields in the JOAPS portal will be made available.
Points Not to Be Forgotten
- An application form once submitted CANNOT be changed/rectified. Therefore, before submitting the JAM 2020 application, please ensure that all the details and all the necessary supporting documents are filled/uploaded and there is NO ERROR.
- Please also ensure to pay the application fee as per the gender/category and test paper option. If the fee is NOT paid, as per the Gender and Category and the number of Test Paper(s) entered in the Application Form, then the filled-in form will be rejected without any intimation to the candidate.
- Multiple applications submitted by a candidate are liable for rejection. Hence, DO NOT submit multiple application forms.
- After submitting an application, if a candidate decides to appear in other test paper or to change test paper(s), he/she can ADD THE ADDITIONAL TEST PAPER or can change the TEST PAPER(S) before the closing date in the earlier submitted application form. In such cases the candidate has to pay an additional fee online before the closing date as per Table below.

Refund/Cancellation
- The application fee is NEITHER refundable NOR transferable. Once submitted, there is no way that a candidate can cancel his/her application.
- In case, the fee amount has been debited (deducted) from your bank account, but JOAPS does not receive the information due to communication failure or any such event, then the money will be automatically credited back to your account from which the money was deducted. However, this may take a week or more, after the closure of the application process.
Options Available when I receive an Offer of Admission
After an offer of admission is made, the candidates will have a subset of these options in the Online Application Portal:
A. Accept and Freeze:
1. Choose this option if you want to accept the present offer but do not want to upgrade to your higher program choices (if any) in further rounds (if any).
2. Once you have chosen this, OTP will be sent to your registered mobile number and you have to enter the OTP to confirm.
3. After confirming, proceed to pay the Seat Booking Fee of Rs. 10,000 for General/ OBC(NCL)/ Foreign National applicants and Rs. 5,000 for SC/ ST/ PwD applicants, within the stipulated deadline as mentioned in the email. Depending on the mode of payment, additional charges may apply.
B. Accept with Upgrade:
1. Choose this option if you want to accept the present offer and want to upgrade to your higher program choices in further rounds (if any).
2. Once you have chosen this, OTP will be sent to your registered mobile number and you have to enter the OTP to confirm.
3. After confirming, proceed to pay the Seat Booking Fee of Rs. 10,000 for General/ OBC(NCL)/ Foreign National applicants and Rs. 5,000 for SC/ ST/ PwD applicants, within the stipulated deadline as mentioned in the email. Depending on the mode of payment, additional charges may apply.
C. Reject and Quit:
1. Choose this option if you want to reject the offered seat and would not like to continue in the admission process of JAM 2020.
2. Once you have chosen this, OTP will be sent to your registered mobile number and you have to enter the OTP to confirm.
D. Withdraw:
1. This option allows candidates who have accepted an offer and paid fees earlier to withdraw from the JAM Admission Process.
2. This option will be only available from 4 – 24 June 2020.
3. The Seat Booking Fee (paid earlier) would be refunded after deducting a Processing Fee of Rs. 1000.
