B.Tech Petroleum Engineering

What is B.Tech. Petroleum Engineering?

  • Petroleum engineering is one of the highest paid engineering course study.
  • Usually, a petroleum engineer, during the course, learns the innovative process of extraction such as mining, drilling, etc.  Simple words, a petroleum engineer is hired by oil or gas companies to implement the efficient methodology for extracting petroleum products from the earth and seafloor.
  • B. Tech Petroleum Engineering is an interesting field of  all engineering courses offering various specialization courses that deal with the production of hydrocarbons, which can either be natural gas or crude oil
  • Requires having a detailed understanding of the physical properties like oil, gas, and water along with the process of oil exploration and crude oils.
  • B.Tech Petroleum engineering requires a minimum of 10+2  basic qualification in Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry subjects with a high percentage of marks.
  •  One can also pursue M.Tech in petroleum engineering after the successful completion of B.Tech and can also choose for research-based studies after post- graduation.
  • Some universities also provide an integrated five-year course where one can earn both a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree.
  • Travel is one of the perks for the petroleum engineers, they have to be on site or offshore for either drilling or mining process. They get to know the remote locations in India and abroad.

There are two major streams under the discipline of petroleum engineering:

  • Petroleum Upstream Engineering – These are the preliminary field concentrating on fundamentals of exploration.
  • Petroleum Downstream Engineering – It is an another type of specialization deals with the practical aspects of processing techniques like petroleum refinery and natural gas, involves the production phase, cost estimating and budgeting.

In Fifth semester, a student will have to select any one of the two sectors- Upstream or Downstream.
