Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences (SVIMS) was established asa Medical University with the SVIMS hospital functioning from 1993 offering post graduate and doctoral courses while the constituent Sri Padmavathi Medical College for Women was established in the year 2014 offering MBBS Courses for women.  The major objectives of the Institute include service, training and education & research in advanced medical sciences and technology. Institute aims at providing super specialty facilities at the minimum prices for the poor.

In 2006, the Government of India included SVIMS as one of the institutions for upgradation at par with AIIMS, New Delhi.
