About Tamil Nadu Agricultural University – [TNAU], Coimbatore

The Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) had its origin from establishment of an Agricultural School at Saidapet, Madras, Tamil Nadu, as early as 1868 and it was later relocated at Coimbatore. In 1920 it was affiliated to Madras University. Till 1946, the Agricultural College and Research Institute, Coimbatore, was the only Institute for Agricultural Education for the whole of South India.  In 1958, it was recognized as a Post-graduate Centre leading to Master’s and Doctoral degrees.

Agricultural College and Research Institute, Coimbatore and Agricultural College and Research Institute, Madurai established in 1965 formed the nucleus of the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University later established in 1971. A few other constituent agricultural colleges of the TNAU are those at Killikulam founded in 1984 and at Kumulur (Trichy) established in 1989 and later shifted to Navalur Kuttappattu (Trichy) in 1992, which is named as Anbil Dharmalingam Agricultural College and Research Institute. Currently there are 15 constituent colleges and 28 private colleges are affiliated to it.

Apart from B.Sc. (Horticulture) and B.E.(Agriculture), the Colleges now offer B. Tech (Food Process Engineering from the academic year 1998-99, B. Tech.(Agricultural Biotechnology) and B. Tech.(Horticulture) from the academic year 2002-2003 and   new degree program B. Tech (Energy and Environmental Engineering from  2004,  B. Tech. (Bioinformatics) from 2006, B. Tech (Agricultural Information Technology) and B.S (Agribusiness Management) from  2007.

The Master’s Programmes include Dual Degree Masters Program with Cornell University, Ithaca, USA, M.Tech. (Ag.) in Nanotechnology, M.Tech.in Environmental Engineering and Plant Genetic Resource and Remote Sensing.

The University Board of Management is chaired by the Vice Chancellor with other members including Registrar, State Agricultural Price Commissioner and Principal Secretary to Government.  The University functions through various Directorates and.

Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) is rated as one of the best Agricultural Universities in India by Indian Council of Agricultural Research, New Delhi. TN AU is an institute of excellence for higher education in Agricultural and allied subjects. It is also one of the top engineering colleges, especially for agricultural engineering in Tamil Nadu.   

The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) of Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), GOI ranked TNAU as the second among the State Agricultural Universities in India. TNAU ranks 44th among “All Universities” category, 68th among “Overall” category of academic institutions and 105th in QS-BRICS.

The Agricultural University has a modern infrastructure with well stocked libraries and spacious reading rooms. A modern Wi-Fi Zone funded by ICAR is functioning in front of the library.  Wi-Fi Facility is provided for students to download online resources on 24X7.

The University has a Spacious Multipurpose interactive Smart Studio to accommodate more than 200 aspirants at a time for pre-placement talk in addition to four air-conditioned Interview Chamber with all facilities.

The TNAU Library System includes a University Library and 10 constitutional college libraries that collectively support the teaching, research and extension programmes of the University. Library database has over 2.5 lakh records including constitutional college library holdings connecting in the form of Web OPAC through Koha Software.

The University Library houses a total collection of over Two lakh documents comprising of books, theses, journals, and compact discs in the fields of Agricultural science. The automated environment facilitates integrated library services for the users.

The University main campus has separate hostels for boys and girls with requisite infra-structural facilities. There are six hostels for boys and four for girls supported by modern kitchen cum dining hall. Students run messes on a dividing system basis.

A Students’ Centre with canteen is available in each campus to provide stationary and essential items.  Infrastructure facilities exist in all colleges for extra-curricular activities.

The students are encouraged to participate in various sports tournaments sponsored by AIU (Association Indian Universities), TNAU Intercollegiate tournaments and State and National level tournaments organized by various sports organizations and Educational Institutes.

Multi Purpose play ground is available for various sports and games including track events. In addition the centre has fitness centre and state of art swimming pool, Courts for Basket Ball, Volley Ball, Tennis, Ball Badminton, etc.

Additionally, Norman Borlaug International Hostel is available for accommodating International students and professor’s quarters for visiting fellows and external experts. A refreshment home is also functioning to cater to the food needs of the staff and visitors.

The University dispensary supports for the health care activities to the students and staff members of the campus. The health centre has four bedded facilities to treat the patients for common health disorders with the required medical equipments for diagnosis and treatments.

The Health Management wing works to maintain health and hygiene of the campus. The TNAU Refreshment Home / Canteen are run by outsourcing to cater to the needs of the staff and students.

  • In the NIRF rankings, TNAU was ranked one among top 50 Universities (under the category UNIVERSITIES) in India during 2016 (40th rank) and 2017 (17th rank).
  • In the international QS BRICS University Rankings (2018), TNAU has moved to #105th rank with a full score for ‘Faculty staff with PhD’ and ‘Faculty Student Ratio’, featuring in 300 top universities from the region. 
  • The University ranks # 1 amongst the 67 Agricultural Universities and 17th amongst the total educational institutions in the country.

For under graduate programmes, candidates should have passed all the subjects in Academic stream of the Qualifying Examination with 10+2 years of schooling under Board of Higher Secondary Education of Government of Tamil Nadu / Central Board of Secondary Education / Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations /other State Government Boards / other International Boards to be eligible.

Selection process is done through online counseling. Online counseling will also be conducted for Special reservations (Differently abled, Eminent Sports person, Ex-servicemen, Descendents of freedom fighters, NRI, and Industrial Sponsorship) and vocational stream candidates.

 The TNAU rank list 2020 for undergraduate (UG) programmes has been released by Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) on its official website — tnau.ac.in. The rank list has been declared in the form of PDF document.

The rank list has been prepared on the basis of marks obtained by the students in their qualifying examination. The cut off score for TNAU 2020 for admission to UG courses is 199.5.

Campus Interviews are regularly conducted in relation to employers’ indent. About 60 companies and other organizations participate annually in Campus Interviews. About 450-500 graduates get placed every year. Job seekers are introduced to plethora of industries.

Selection process includes written test, Group Discussion and Personal Interview. Job Fair is conducted in March / April coinciding with closure of academic programmes. Placement Officers meet of constituent colleges is held once in a year for further development of placement and higher education.

This university has the largest library of Coimbatore, and even outsiders can read books. There are vast library sections. Every lecture hall has Wi-Fi availability. Facilities in the hostel mess are quite good. They have a very large playground, gym for fitness and even a swimming pool.

Teachers are mostly from the same college, and entering into our college is a very big thing. Teachers teach very well. In this college, one can have a real experience of hardships of life. It makes the student perfect for anything.
