Government College of Engineering, Salem-11, was established in the year 1966 as the third Engineering Institution in Tamil Nadu. The College is autonomous and affiliated to Anna University.
Envisioning the students as excellent and professional Engineers in the field of Science and Technology, the College strives to impart update technical education and knowledge of global standards to them.
GCE, Salem offers 6 UG and 5 PG programmes. It is a recognized center for research under Anna University for Ph.D., and M.S., programs. GCE, Salem is also a participating institution in Quality Enhancement in Engineering Education (QEEE) programme of Department of Higher Education Government of India.
All the departments have well qualified faculty members and excellent infrastructural facilities. The College is located on a 162 hectares site surrounded by hills and a modern infrastructure. Apart from spacious class rooms and well equipped laboratories, the College has a fully air-conditioned auditorium with high tech audio visual communication aids.
The excellent Library of GCE has a specialized collection of 65099 books, Journals and other resources in sciences, Engineering and technology. Besides, audio visual information access facilities are provided. Library is well equipped with ample number of tables and chairs. The racks are well partitioned as per the genres which hold 65099 numbers of books in total.
A Digital library is also functioning in the College.
The Institute hostels accommodate boys and girls separately within the University Campus. The hostel with a capacity of 569 seats for boys and 279 for girls is administered by the ex-officio warden and associate warden, hostel superintendents and others. The students are required to abide by the rules and regulations of hostel stay and mess in the hostel.
The College has also quarters for the staff in the college premises.
A Consumer Co-operative store operates in the premises of the institution supplying books, instruments, stationary and toilet articles to students and staff of the college.
A dispensary in the premises under a medical officer caters to the urgent medical needs of the students and members of the faculty and their family
Two buses and a van operate for the convenient transportation of the students and staff of the College.
The College takes pride in having a planetarium for stimulating interest among the school students and a research and development centre in the college premises.
The College promotes the development of histrionic talent and cultural activities of the students through a Fine Arts Club. Facilities are also provided for various games and the college actively encourages the participation of the students in various games and tournaments conducted across the state.

The eligibility criteria differ as per the course and branch selected by the candidate. However, a broad eligibility criterion for UG, PG, Diploma and PhD Engineering courses is given below for candidates:
BE/B. Tech: Candidates should pass Class 12 from a recognized board with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics as core subjects securing a minimum of 60 per cent aggregate score.
B. Tech Lateral Entry: Candidates to pass a three-year Diploma granted by the Board of Technical Examination of a State Government, with minimum 45 per cent aggregate or equivalent.
ME/M. Tech: Candidates who have completed their BE/B. Tech degree with a valid score in GATE are eligible for ME/M. Tech degree course.
Diploma: Aspirants must have passed Class 10/equivalent examination, with at least 35 per cent in Science and Mathematics subjects.
PhD: Aspirants are required to secure a minimum of 55 per cent aggregate or 5.5 CPI in B. Tech/M. Tech or equivalent degree in relevant streams.

The placement and Training Cell is headed by the Placement Officer/ HOD /Metallurgical Engineering Department. It functions through the Student Coordinators elected from each department during their pre-final year
The students are given training in their Aptitude, Technical, Communication, Logical & Verbal Reasoning and Soft Skills from the third year of their Under Graduation. Moreover, Guest Lectures and Training Programs by experts from various engineering industries are also arranged.
The placements of the students are facilitated by inviting a number of well-reputed companies including Zoho, Accenture, TCS, and CTS, etc. for the On-Campus Recruitment Drive every year The placement record of the college is 100% for 7 consecutive academic years.

As the faculty members in the College are mostly selected through government exams, they are well qualified and well experienced. They are good in the subject knowledge. They are ready to help you, if interested. The course curriculum is good. As it is an autonomous institution, the course curriculum gets updated frequently. The institution mostly focuses on strengthening the fundamentals but not on research.
About 80% of the students from the course got placed. Top recruiting companies for the courses are Aquagreen and Accenture. Almost 100% of the students get internships. It is recommend that all the intermediate students study in this college to get well placed, get highly trained and experienced in relevant skills.
