Indian Institute of Bombay (IIT Bombay) conducts the GATE 2021 through the online medium from the 5th to 7th February and from 12th February to 13th February 2021 for 27 subjects.
GATE is an examination conducted jointly by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore and seven Indian Institutes of Technology at Bombay, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras, and Roorkee on behalf of the National Coordination Board (NCB)-GATE.
GATE 2021 is the base for admissions to M.E. /M. Tech & Ph.D programs at IITs, IISc. , NITs, GFTIs and other Universities in India.

GATE 2021 Admit Card
Admit Cards for the GATE 2021 entrance exam is made available on the GOAPS website. The applicant can follow the steps mentioned below for obtaining his/her admit card:
- The Applicant can download the admit card from the GOAPS website. The admit card is made available for download from the first week of January 2021 as expected. All admit cards will not be sent to the applicant via post/courier/ email.
- Applicants are instructed to bring a print-out of the downloaded Admit Card to the exam hall for verification along with the original and valid photo Identity Document (NO photocopy/scanned copy/NOT an expired document), specified during the filling up of the online application (for example Passport, PAN card, Voter ID, Aadhaar-UID card, College ID, Employee ID and Driving License).
GATE 2021 Exam Pattern
GATE 2021 entrance exam is organized for 27 subjects. And so, the applicant needs to keep the following in mind:
The applicant can appear for only one of the 25 GATE papers. The entrance exam is conducted online via a computer-based test medium. The questions will be displayed on the computer screen for the candidates to answer.
The question paper is in a multiple-choice question format with each question carrying 1 or 2 marks each in all sections and papers. The questions are of objective format with the applicant to select one correct answer from the four given choices provided.
In the multiple-choice question formats, each wrong answer marked carries 1 negative mark. Besides, the objective type, in the numerical answer type question format each question carries 1 o r2 marks as correct marks.
In case of objective type questions, the answer is a signed real number entered by the applicant using the virtual numeric keypad on the monitor (keyboard of the computer will be disabled). There will be no choices shown for these types of questions.
The answer can be written as a number or an integer only and nothing else. The answer could also be written in decimals as well, such as 10.1 or 10.001 or 10.001 (depending on the decimals marked).
Some numerical answer type (NAT) problems have an appropriate range that is considered while evaluating the numerical answer type questions.
Kindly Note: There is NO negative marking for the wrong answers in NAT questions.
GATE 2021 Exam Duration
- The question paper of all GATE entrance exams is of 3 hours duration. The question paper consists of 65 questions of a total of 100 marks. Since the exam is of 3-hour duration, the computer screen will close after the time period stopping all further actions.
- The applicants are advised to be seated 40 minutes before the scheduled time of the exam. Applicants can log in and read the instructions 20 minutes before the scheduled time of the exam.
- The applicant cannot enter the exam hall after the scheduled time of 09.30 is hours in the forenoon session and 14.30 pm in the afternoon session.
- Applicants will not be permitted to leave the exam hall before the exam gets over.
What are the Patterns of Questions asked?
GATE 2021 would contain questions of two different types in all the papers:
The Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) carry 1 or 2 marks each in all the defined papers and sections.
These questions are of objective type and each question will have a choice of four answers, out of which the applicant has to select (Mark) the correct answer.
Negative Marking for Wrong Answers: For a wrong answer chosen in an MCQ, there will be negative marking. For each 1-mark MCQ, 1/3 mark wrongly answered 1/3 mark is deducted.
Similarly, for 2-mark MCQ’s, 2/3 mark will be deducted for all wrong answers. In the Numerical Answer Type (NAT) Questions section, each question carry 1 or 2 marks each in all papers and sections.
There is NO negative marking for a wrong answer in NAT questions.

GATE Exam 2021 Application Procedure
- Application for GATE 2021 must be submitted ONLINE (through GOAPS website – https://gate.iitd.ac.in) by paying necessary application fee.
- For GATE 2021, all information regarding the application process is made available on the GOAPS website.
- The photograph, signature, certificate of qualifying degree, category certificate (SC/ST/PwD) and/or Dyslexic certificate, must be uploaded wherever applicable, during the submission of the online application.
- Applicants need to enter the ID number specified in any one of the following blank IDs: Passport, PAN Card, Voter ID, Aadhaar-UID, College ID, Employee ID, and Driving License.
- The applicants, who do not possess any of these identity cards, should arrange any one of them before making the application.
- Kindly note that the GATE application form is not for sale or otherwise anywhere.
GATE 2021 Application Fee

- The Application Fee for the entrance exam is neither refundable nor transferable.
- The payments can be made online using either net banking or debit card or credit card.
- According to the norms, additional online transaction charges or bank charges are applied.
- These charges are shown on the payment portal.
GATE Exam 2021 Results
- GATE 2021 results will be announced on the 3rd week of March 2021 and will be made available on the GOAPS website: https://gate.iitd.ac.in.
GATE 2021 scores are valid for three years from the announcement of the results.

- Refer good reference books for preparing the GATE 2021 exam.
- Try to solve previous years’ sample papers and question papers to get a feel of the exam.
- Solve online mock tests to know the pattern of the question paper.
- Make friends who are seriously interested in the GATE entrance exam.

- Do group study to prepare better.
