Kharkiv National Medical University (KNMU) founded in 1805 in Kharkiv city in the north-eastern part of Ukraine is one of the oldest higher educational establishments of Ukraine. Ternopil State Medical Institute was established on September 1, 1957 from the ruins of the World War II which destroyed the city. As a pedagogical, scientific, medical, cultural and educational center of the region, the Institute had successfully grown since then.  The Institute was accorded the status of State Medical Academy in 1997 and later in 2004, the Institute was granted the title of State Medical University.

The college Poltava state medical university was established in 1921 by the dental personnel of Kharkiv Medical Academy.
