VIT Vellore was established in the year 1984. It was founded by Dr G. Viswanathan, a former Parliamentarian and Minister in the Tamil Nadu Government. VIT provides quality higher education that is on par with International standards. Vellore Institute of Technology or VIT University is a self-financing institution formerly called the Vellore Engineering College. It got its University status in the year 2001. It covers many areas of education like Engineering, Architecture, Management, Law, Language, Science, etc.
The management along with its exceptional faculty strives to improve the quality of higher education consistently. The University has signed over 200 Memoranda of Understanding [MoUs] with various international universities. An International Relations Office has been established by the University to assist in international efforts. Because of the high quality of education and placement offers, a lot of students try for the VIT Vellore Admission every year. Approximately 2,12,000 candidates appeared for the VIT Engineering Entrance Examination [VITEEE] in 2018.

It is especially committed to research and has set up thirteen research centres to drive innovation and research among students and faculty. VIT University has implemented over 50 sponsored research projects with institutions like Defence establishments, the Indian Space Research Organisation [ISRO] and Atomic Research Centres. Students are given opportunities to pursue their research projects in Foreign universities.
