About University of Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala
The University of Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram was founded as the University of Travancore in the princely State of Travancore in 1937. With the Kerala University Act (Act 14 of 1957) the University of Travancore was renamed as University of Kerala. The University had three campuses located in three different parts of the State viz. Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam and Kozhikode with the number of affiliated colleges growing manifold until in 1968, the University Centre at Kozhikode became a full-fledged University. Subsequently, in 1971, the Cochin University of Science and Technology and Kerala Agricultural University and in 1983, Mahatma Gandhi University was established restricting the jurisdiction of the University of Kerala to Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha Districts and some parts of Pathanamthitta District.
Currently, the University has sixteen faculties and forty-one departments of teaching and research in addition to study centres and other departments. Teaching, Research and Knowledge extension are the mandates of the Departments.
The primary focus of the Departments is on postgraduate programmes, M. Phil programmes (1-year research degree) and doctoral research. The University has also a number of study centres in specialised areas such as Nano-technology, Kerala Studies, Bioinformatics, Women’s Studies, Learning Difficulties, Sree Narayana Studies, Gandhian Studies etc.
The University has over 150 affiliated colleges forming a major part of the University The role of the University is in prescribing courses of study and conducting examinations and issuing certificates. Of these 60 are Arts and Science colleges.
There are 2 Law colleges, 17 Engineering Colleges, 9 MBA/MCA Colleges, 37 Teacher Training Colleges, 4 Medical Colleges, 4 Ayurveda colleges, 2 Homeopathy Colleges, one Siddha Medical College, 3 Dental colleges, 10 Nursing Colleges, 4 Pharmacy Colleges, 2 Fine Arts Colleges, and a Music College. The University also has a National College of Physical Education affiliated to it. The total number of students in these colleges crosses 84,000.
The University Senate and Academic Council have a large number of elected members and students in both. The executive body of the University, the Syndicate also has a student representative in it (for the first time in Indian Universities, in 1977). The University policies are aimed at student empowerment in every field.

University of Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram – Facilities
The University of Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala has a modern infrastructure with a well-stocked central library of over 3,50,000 books, and subscriptions to more than 500 journals, periodicals and magazines. The Digital library also facilitates services such as UGC Infonet.
The University’s Main Library is built near its city campus and caters to all students, staff and public. In addition to this, Karyavattom campus has a Campus Library. Department libraries and College libraries complete the information service to students. The special collections also include Women’s Studies, Government Publications, General Biographies, UN and World Bank Publications, bound volumes of newspapers and journals and rare books. It is the only library in Kerala which serves as a depository of UN and World Bank publications. The library is currently in the process of digitizing its rare collections.
The University provides hostels to residential students (both boys and girls). There are six hostels functioning under the University of Kerala at Kariavattom campus and at Thycaud, Thiruvananthapuram. Two Men’s (PG & Research) and Three Women’s(Two PG & One Research) Hostels at Kariavattom Campus and one Women’s hostel at Vazhuthacaud are functioning. The hostel provides admission to UG/PG/M.Phil/Research students.
University buses operate mainly for the conveyance of students to safely reach the campus from various parts of the city. The buses are registered as educational institution buses.
The University has High-Speed Wireless Networking in both the Kariavattom and Senate House Campuses. Both the campuses are networked in an effective manner taking into account the future developments in the field of technology and communication, thus providing maximum benefits not only to the employees but also the stakeholders and the students.
Kariavattom Campus has a playground where students play football, cricket and hockey. Gymnasium and facilities for participating in adventure sports are available in the Department of Physical Education which houses a stadium as well. Shuttle court, basketball court and facilities for indoor games are also available.
The Thiruvananthapuram Observatory stands on a hill, about 60 feet high, and 200 feet above the level of the sea. It commands an extensive and beautiful view of an undulating and finely variegated country towards the north, the east, and the south-and of the sea horizon to the west. The eastern view is terminated by the Ghat Mountains.
