Tamil University was started in the year 1981 by a group of veteran scholars at Thanjavur. The negligence for the Tamil Language has led to the establishment of Tamil University. It was recognized as University by UGC in the year 1983. The campus is widespread over 850 across with antique building structures.
Tamil University Admissions are done through an entrance test and counseling process to several Undergraduate, Postgraduate, Diploma and Research programmes. The University also provides distance education programmes under the Directorate of Distance Education of the Tamil University.
Tamil University mainly aims to achieve advancement of high-level learning and research on Tamil language, literature, and culture. The main focus of the University is not just on existence, but on best excellence in all branch of knowledge for the benefit of society. It mainly strives to analyze and identify the contribution of Tamil culture to Indian Culture.

Library: This university offers the facility of a Virtual Library, which is an online facility offered by a conventional library to read books and access other facilities. Digital library is a collection of various documents in organized electronic form, available on the Internet or CD-ROM disks.
Hostel: The hostel facility offered by the university is really impressive. The hostel rooms are well maintained, clean. The food given to the candidates staying in hostels is good and hygienic. It mainly has south Indian dishes.
Career Development Cell: The university also offers guidance to its students not only in the educational sphere, but also guides them in getting job opportunities and further studies. This cell identifies the field where the professional skills and interests lies of the students, so that they can guide them both in their studies and job opportunities
Canteen: There is a canteen in the campus which offers delicious food, during the university hours. This can be availed by both the students and the teaching and non-teaching staff members.
