Shanmugha College of Engineering in Thanjavur, which is now renamed as Shanmugha Arts, Science, Technology & Research Academy (SASTRA) was established in 1984.

SASTRA University, Thanjavur – Facilities
The University has a sprawling campus with a built-up area of 2,22,129.02 square metre spread over 232 acres. The University has a state-of-the-art infrastructure, excellent computer facilities and a well-stocked library. The University also has well equipped laboratories, spacious class rooms, Production and Training Centre, workshops, etc.
Saraswathi Sadan, library of the university has an area of about 47,000 sq ft with modern study area, audio visual room, internet and reprographic facilities catering to the needs of the students and staff. It contains over 1,02,600 books valued at Rs 5.29 crores, the library subscribes to 290 journals and magazines related to Engineering, Management, Legal etc.
The library also subscribes to over 35 online journal databases like Science Direct, IEEE, ACM, ASME, ASCE, Springer Journals, Royal Society of Chemistry, American Chemical Society, Nature Journal, Institute of Physics, Proquest Science Journals, American Institute of Physics, IET Digital Library, ASTM-SEDL, EBSCO, ABI/INFORM – Complete, JSTOR, Cambridge University Press, Oxford University Press, etc. providing full text access to around 11,000 scientific, technical & management journals and over 12,000 ASTM standards.
The multimedia section is equipped with state-of-the-art computer systems, plasma screen Television, DVD, Video and Audio players and over 1800 educational and informative CDs.
The library has reprographic facilities and attracts an average of over 600 students a day.
Besides, the central library, each school has its own library with technical books and journals.
A full-fledged branch of the Indian Overseas Bank is actively operational at SASTRA campus with 2 ATMs – one for the general public and the other exclusively for the girls at the Girls Hostel along with a City Union Bank ATM.
The Department of Posts & Telegraph as established a Post Office within the campus for the students, faculty and nearby village population. The canteen at SASTRA provides the right ambience for informal get-togethers and serves a variety of culinary delights.
There are 9 boys’
hostel and 6 girls’ hostels providing accommodation to over 4000 boys and 2400
girls with rooms allotted on sharing basis. The hostels are equipped with
all amenities for living, dining and recreation that makes each inmate feel at
home. A completely balanced vegetarian diet is served in all hostels
equipped with steam-cooking facilities. There is also North Indian Cuisine in
addition to the South Indian culinary delights.
A well furnished guest house with adequate number of A/C and non-A/C rooms is available for visitors on prior request and subject to availability.
The Public Safety Office is located in the Student Center and is staffed 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Medical treatment given by the nursing staff and doctor on campus is offered without charge to all students.
To promote excellence in sports and provide organized relaxation and entertainment, an indoor stadium “MARUTI” has been constructed and equipped with billiards tables, badminton courts, a basketball court, table tennis, and carom board with indoor lighting facility.
A multipurpose fitness center has been established in the indoor stadium with sophisticated fitness equipment and enables students to work out and maintain a good physique.
A separate gymnasium and jogging track is available for the girl students. To promote excellence in sports and been constructed and equipped with billiards tables, badminton courts, a basketball court, table tennis and carom boards.
In addition other support facilities like Admin Block, Hospital, well-laid tar roads, DG back up power supply, RO water treatment plants, Effluent treatment plants, Bio-Gas plant for power generation, Canteen, Higginbotham Bookstore, Campus Stores, etc. make the student life at SASTRA enjoyable.

SASTRA University, Thanjavur – Cutoffs
SASTRA University cut off for engineering is based on 2 streams. All the applicants will be eligible for both the streams and need not submit two separate application forms. This application will be considered for both streams.
Stream 1 for 70% of seats will consider both JEE mains score and 12th standard scores whereas stream 2 for 30% seats will only consider 12th standard scores. For all degree programmes in Law, admissions will be based on the CLAT-2019 Scores and 12th standard aggregate taken in the ratio of 25 %: 75% respectively.

Lab infrastructure is excellent but hostel facilities are modest. Hostel life is good though with lot lof iving in very small rooms, making good friendships for a lifetime.
The University has a knowledgeable faculty especially in school of electrical and electronics engineering. Course curriculum is regularly updated in order to keep up with the latest trends in industry.
Teachers are helpful and good. They are highly qualified and absolutely knowledgeable. Teaching quality is excellent. The faculty makes sure that every student is perfect in the subject. The course curriculum is relevant and it makes the student ready for industry.
