About Karnatak University, Dharwad

The Bombay legislature of the erstwhile Bombay Presidency established Karnatak University through the Karnatak University Act 1949. It became a statutory University on 1st March 1950. The jurisdiction of the University extends to Dharwad. Gadag, Haveri and Uttar Kannada districts.

 It has several Post Graduate centres with 47 PG Departments. The University is home to 224 teachers and 4500 students (PG, M.Phil., Ph.D.) with the girl students constituting  47% of the total strength. Six per cent of the students are from outside the State.

There are 5 constituent colleges offering UG and PG courses in science, arts, commerce, fine arts, law and education. s. Over the last 60 years the number of affiliated colleges has increased from a mere 34 to more than 250.

The University has 3 PG campuses, at Haveri (42 acres). Gadag (32 acres) and Karwar (6 acres) all of which are district headquarters. All campuses are self-contained and are at various stages of development. They cater to the needs of local people as well as promote specialized studies. 

The University has been a hot destination for students from various countries like UAE, Nigeria, South Africa, Bangladesh, Iran, etc. The Department of Foreign Languages offers courses in Russian. German and French languages. An International Student Advisor has been nominated to cater to the needs and problems of the foreign students.

Governor of Karnataka is the Chancellor of the University assisted by Pro-Chancellor and Vice Chancellors.  The Academic Council is headed by the Vice Chancellor.

Karnatak University main campus is in Pavate Nagar spread over about 750 acres of land. The campus houses 50 Departments, Central Library. Auditorium, Stadium, Badminton Hall with Gymnasium, Employment Information and Guidance Bureau, Students Home, Academic Staff College, Health Centre, Prasaranga, SC/ST/CAT I/BCM/Cells, 2 Guest Houses, 2 Banks, a Post Ofice, a Canteen, Printing Press and Museums in Kannada Research Institute Museum and Museum of Animals and Plants in addition to a Primary School.

All the classrooms are equipped with modern teaching and learning aids including audio-visuals, slides, OHP and LCD projectors.

The Karnatak University, Dharwad, Karnataka, has a spacious computer centre with all the latest machinery and equipments for learning and training in software development. The computer centre has the following facilities:

  • Forty HP Thin Clients
  • Two HP Proliant Servers
  • Six laser jet Printers
  • Two UPS (each eight hours backup)

The University also has a special workshop room that enhances the modification and repair of technical machines by the students. In addition to fabrication work, repairs to instruments such as comparators, vacuum pumps vary types of glass apparatus are undertaken. Apart from giving service to various science departments, the workshop has extended its service to the Engineering department, press, Garden, Library and Science departments of the Karnatak Science College, Dharwad. 

The central library is equipped with thousands of books on all subjects, Journals and educational CD-ROMs. The University is part of the UGC-INFONET which affords access to more than 5000 electronic journals for advanced study and research. A full-fledged Computer Centre has been set up in the Students Home.

There are 21 hostels in all, including a working women’s hostel and ladies hostels. These provide residential accommodation to 2600 students of UG and PG course. There are three girls hostels, one working women hostel, and three boys hostels, and 35 students capacity kitchenette (for self-cooking) on the campus. There is also one hostel run by social welfare department for boys.

Teaching and non-teaching staff members are provided with quarters to stay on the campus. There are about 80 quarters of different categories for Lecturers, Readers and Professors and there are about 50 quarters for Non-teaching staff inclusive of class IV employees.

University has provided Recreation and Sports facilities for all the students, teaching and non-teaching staff members. There are good playgrounds – tennis courts (two), Basketball Court, Swimming Pool, Volley Ball Court, Gymnasium, Indoor Shuttle Badminton Court, Table Tennis facility, on the Campus. Post Graduate Gymkhana is equipped with T.V., Radio and indoor games, maintained by Directorate of student’s welfare.

Indoor games facilities such as table tennis and wrestling are available. The department is equipped with advanced scientific teaching aids and apparatus for better teaching and coaching. Sports department also provides outdoor playing facilities for Basketball, Table Tennis, Tennis (Two Courts), Volleyball, Kho-Kho, Kabaddi, indoor Badminton Court, 400 mts. Standard Track and other training gadgets.

A Health centre has been set up for the benefit of the Students, Staff and their dependents. Health Center has been provided with modern facilities such as computerized ECG Machine, Electronic Blood-Sugar, Blood-Cholesterol and Urine analysis Machines.

A cooperative store is run by the University on non-profit loss basis for the public. It sells all the items of everyday use like toiletries, stationary etc.

Canteen and boarding facilities are provided through the central canteen and five small canteens. Banking facility is provided by nationalized banks – Syndicate Bank and State Bank of India. Postal and Telegraphic services are also provided on the Campus.
