Established in the year 2002, Tamil Nadu Open University is the first open university at Chennai located in the capital city of the state of Tamil Nadu. The main objective of the university is to provide benefits to the people who are not able to afford higher education. The course programs provided by the University are recognized by UGC, NCTE, RCI, and DEB. The University offers several UG and PG programmes such as B.A., B.Com, B.Sc., BBA, MBA, MCA, M.A. and M.Sc. TNOU also proides Certificate and Vocational course programs to the candidates along with full-fledged courses. It has around 218 Programmes of study across various disciplines. It is also the the first University in the state to have introduced the credit – based self – learning materials in print. The University is one of the 5, among the 15 Open Universities in the country, to have been accorded the 12B of the UGC.

Library: This university offers the facility of a Virtual Library, which is an online facility offered by a conventional library to read books and access other facilities. Digital library is a collection of various documents in organized electronic form, available on the Internet or CD-ROM disks.

Hostel: The hostel facility offered by the university is really impressive. The hostel rooms are well maintained, clean. The food given to the candidates staying in hostels is good and hygienic. It mainly has south Indian dishes.

Career Development Cell: The university also offers guidance to its students not only in the educational sphere, but also guides them in getting job opportunities and further studies. This cell identifies the field where the professional skills and interests lies of the students, so that they can guide them both in their studies and job opportunities

Canteen: There is a canteen in the campus which offers delicious food, during the university hours. This can be availed by both the students and the teaching and non-teaching staff members.

Classroom: The university has modern and well-equipped classrooms.

TNOU University provides the facilities to reserved category and disabled candidates in the form of exemption from tuition fees. The following are the scholarships available to the students:

SC/ ST students who are studying distance education are eligible for reimbursement of fees if they are not employed and if the annual income of their parents does not exceed over INR 1,00,000. The candidates should apply for scholarships in the prescribed form to be secured from the Offices of Adi Dravidar/ Tribal Welfare Department along with the supporting documents.
Differently-abled students studying a course Program at the University are eligible for tuition fee exemption.
