The Indian Institute of Technology at Madras, Chennai in Tamil Nadu is a public technical and research university situated in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. The Institute is now recognized as an Institute of National Importance. The foundation of the Institute dates back to 1959 by Professor Humayun Kabir, who inaugurated the first of its kind Institute for Technology and Research.

The IIT Madras is a residential institute with administrative and supporting staff all within a self contained campus of 250 hectares of land area.  The Institute has been assisted both technically and financially by the former government of West Germany.  The Institute has around 600 faculty, 10,000 enrolled students and 1,250 administrative and supporting staff within premises.  

The institute is a prime center for teaching, research and industrial consultancy in the country. The Institute of Technology has maintained its reputation as a university for quality based education with a distinguished approach towards learning and research. IIT Madras has an extensive residential area of 250 hectares of campus near the Chennai airport and the Chennai Railway Station.

The Indian Institute of Technology, Chennai infrastructure includes various facilities like central library, central glass blowing section, and sophisticated analytical instrumentation centre, P.G. Senapathy Centre for Computing Resources [CC], Central Workshop [CWS], and Central Electronic Centre [CEC].

The New Academic Block hosts the Departments of Mathematics, Chemical Engineering, Metallurgical & Materials Engineering. The Class rooms are in CRC, Raman and Ramanujan Blocks. There is an Open Air Theatre and Auditorium.

The Institute being a residential institute provides accommodation to the students within well furnished hostels. There are       4 hostels for girls and 15 for boys within the campus. The hostel contains single/double and triple rooms for the students. The hostel has internet facilities in every room along with a computer in each room. Every hostel has washing machines, fully equipped sports facilities, music rooms, tech rooms and television rooms.

Hostel facilities include a garden and a library from which students can borrow books. Most hostel-level meetings take place in common rooms. Good food and music are available within the campus.

The Institute operates buses and mini autos connecting the main gate to different parts of the campus, including the Hostel and Academic zones at frequent intervals.

Admission to all the programmes is based on JEE Advanced rank, followed by Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) Counseling with the basic eligibility being pass in higher Secondary Examination for B. Tech and other under graduate courses.   The institute-specific qualifying cutoff is announced after the declaration of JEE Advanced 2020 result to manage the seat allotment process. The eligibility for post graduate courses is a pass in B. Tech course and clearing GATE.

The seat allotment process is based on the college cutoff and the candidate’s preference for courses and colleges. The cutoffs are generally declared in seven rounds of JoSAA Counseling based on opening and closing ranks for each of the programme-specific specializations.

The teachers are all Ph.D. graduates. They have great knowledge in their own domain. They are very down to earth and help in clearing all our doubts. The faculty is awesome for each and every course.
