The National Institute of Technology (formerly Regional Engineering College) Tiruchirappalli was established as a joint venture of the Government of India and the Government of Tamil Nadu in 1964 to produce world-class engineers who will cater to the growing technological needs of the nation. 

The institute was granted Deemed University Status with the approval of the UGC /AICTE and Government of India in 2003 and renamed as National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli (NIT-T). NIT-T has been declared as an institution of national importance by the National Institute of Technology act 2007. 

The vision of NIT Tiruchirappalli is to become a university with global standards where the learning and research are to integrate to sustain society and industry. The mission of NIT Tiruchirappalli is to create an amazing learning environment to serve a changing and evolving society.

National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli also won the prestigious CII-AICTE best industry-linked institute by competing with other IITs, NITs and IIITs. The institute also received national-level awards from FICCI for social responsibility and from ASSOCHAM for the best institute to used ICT tools in education. The institute also received High impact Entrepreneurship Campus Award jointly awarded by the Ministry of Skills Development and Entrepreneurship.

National Institute of Technology, Tiruchirappalli now offers ten undergraduate courses and twenty-six postgraduate courses in various disciplines of Science, Engineering and Technology besides Ph.D programme in all the departments.

The campus is spread over an extensive 800 acres of land. As a world-class institute, the Institute offers to the students, faculty and staff top-class amenities making the stay in NITT a memorable experience for the students.  

There are special lecture halls within the college premises for the students and staff. 

The Institute has a modern Central Library with more than two and a half lakh of documents consisting of Technical books, reports, standards, CD-ROMS, Audio Visual Educational Cassettes, and back volumes of journals.

The library subscribes to 164 periodicals (print) plus 8000+ e-Journals and 2500+ e-books besides a holding of 17690 back volumes of journals. The library also contains 16,750 books in the Book Bank scheme.

Digital Knowledge Centre has been established with 35 Ubuntu Computer systems with an internet connection. Wi-Fi facility has been provided for laptop users. CCTV Web cameras have been fixed in the Central Library and the entire building is under camera surveillance. 

There are 22 boys’ and 6 girls accommodating 5797 undergraduate and postgraduate students and research scholars. The hostel has a well clean mess for preparing hygienic food for the students and the staff.

The institute hospital is located within the campus; it is located amidst the hostel/residential zone and the academic zone. The NITT Hospital provides primary health care round the clock on all the days.

The institute has a shopping complex within its premises. An excellent store housing all sorts of goods be it stationeries or groceries.

The College provides Shuttle services within the campus for students on working days, Students Staff Service to Tiruchirappalli (SSST) trips for NITT students and employees, School trips towards of faculties and staff under facilities to Faculties and staff of NITT.

The college offers 24/7 security to the students.  The Institute also provides guest houses for visitors and parents to meet their students.

The Institute has a central workshop for the students to practice and experiment on the new gadgets for building a better society.

NIT Trichy, Tiruchirappalli, Tamil Nadu – Cutoffs & Eligibility

Admission to Undergraduate Programmes is based on +2 / other Qualifying Examination and in the Joint Entrance Examination, JEE (Main). Admissions are open for Foreign Nationals / Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs) / Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) under Direct Admission of Students Abroad (DASA) Scheme. Admission to postgraduate Programmes is based on the scores in the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) and the admissions are through the Centralized Counseling for M.Tech. / M.Arch./ M.Plan. Admissions (CCMT). Admissions to M.Sc. Programmes (Physics, Chemistry and Computer Science) are based on the marks obtained in the entrance test conducted by the Institute and the qualifying degree examination marks.

The institute-specific qualifying cutoff is announced after the declaration of JEE Main 2020 result to manage the seat allotment process. The seat allotment process is based on the college cutoff and the candidate’s preference for courses and colleges.

The cutoffs are generally declared in seven rounds of JoSAA Counselling based on opening and closing ranks for each of the programme-specific specializations. The cutoffs are further divided into gender and various categories such as SC, ST, OBC, PwD, etc. After JoSAA Counseling the remaining seats are filled through two rounds of CSAB Counseling.

The department of Training and Placement of the institute has the following functions and responsibilities:

  • Nurtures Industry Institute interaction, by organizing and coordinating frequent industrial visits, in-plant training and projects of industrial relevance for the students, with the sole aim of zeroing down the hiatus between the industry and the academia.
  • Receives and forwards the feedback pertinent to curriculum improvement from the visiting companies to the faculty, to ensure that the curriculum follows the latest industrial trends.
  • Helps every student define his/her career interest through individual expert counselling.
  • Makes available updated database and job profile of the companies and thus helps each student analyze and choose the company of his interest. The department has in its active file a database of nearly 500 companies.
  • Organizes and coordinates Campus Placement Program, to fulfil its commitment of a   job to every aspirant.

The placements are based on the marks and merit scored by the students in their final examination.  The National Institute of Technology, Trichy places brilliant students/ candidates in reputed companies like American Express, CapeGemini, Cisco Systems, IBM, Intel, Mercedez Benz, Microsoft, Rolls Royce and many other exciting companies.
