The university first beguned its journey in Madras in 1946 and was shifted to Anantapur in the year 1948. The affiliation of the college 1st happened with Madras University from 1946-1955 and Sri Venkateswara University from 1955-1972. In 2008, under AP Legislature Act, JNTU set up 3 independent universities – JNTU Kakinada, JNTU Hyderabad, and JNTU Anantapur. JNTU took under its fold Oil Technology Research Institute, Anantapur and JNTUA College of Engineering, Pulivendula along with JNTUA College of Engineering, Kalikiri. Apart from these, JNTUA currently has 98 engineering colleges, 33 pharmacy colleges and 29 MBA/ MCA colleges. The university provides BTech and MTech degrees in several streams of engineering – civil, mechanical, aeronautical, computer and systems, chemical, information technology, electronics and electrical, thermal engineering, biotechnology, power electronics, refrigeration and air-conditioning. The scope of BPharm and MPharm is also big. Moreover, MCA, PharmD, MBA, integrated courses on management and science are also organized.

•The students must have a Post Graduate Degree in relevant discipline with a minimum of 55% marks in aggregate.
• In case of SC/ST students, the eligible percentage for the candidate is 50%
• MCA degree holders are not eligible to do Ph.D./M.Phil. in Computer Science & Engineering.
• The admissions to PhD/ M.Phil courses will be made by the University based on the performance in the Entrance Examination followed by an interview.
