The Government Medical College, Kozhikode in Kerala, also known as Calicut Medical College is a premier medical college located at the heart of the Kozhikode City of Kerala. Established in 1957, it is the second prestigious medical college that grew into a premier centre for medical education in the State of Kerala. Earlier it had been affiliated with the University of Calicut, and today it is affiliated to the Kerala University of Health Sciences.

The medical college started with 1183 beds serving more than 40% of the population of the District. Currently, with a bed strength of 3025, Government Medical College Kozhikode has the largest bedded hospital complex in the country.

Academics

The College campus is situated on a sprawling 270-acre land and is roughly about 8 km from the main city of Kozhikode/Calicut.  

Started with a modest beginning, the medical college today offers 250 seats for undergraduate courses in medicine.  In addition, it conducts postgraduate programmes in 28 disciplines in the field. Besides, the medical college at present has super-speciality courses in 10 departments.

The medical college conducts degree and post-degree courses in Nursing and Pharmacy as well as degree and diploma courses in paramedical sciences. A well equipped MCI recognized Centre for Medical Education technology is functioning in the College and it caters to 12 medical colleges. 

The medical college has a super speciality complex, a new block for the Institute of Maternal and Child Health, an artificial limb centre, a college of nursing, college of pharmacy, casualty complex. The Medical College Library and almost all the departments and offices of the college, along with hospitals have computer facilities. New additions to the collegiate hospital include a multistoried super specialty complex, new block for Institute of Maternal and Child Health, and the Institute for Sports Medicine.

The College has a state of art cardiac cath labs, MRI Scan, Doppler Ultra Sound and Digital Radiography System. The college envisages a mutually beneficial unit for community psychiatry under IMHANS and medical college psychiatry departments.

Three new departments were added to the college to address the overload of outpatients on a daily basis. These are named as Department of Neonatology, Department of Emergency & Critical Care Medicine, and Department of Family Medicine.

Departments under the medical college cover Anatomy, Biochemistry, Physiology, Community Medicine, Forensic Medicine, Microbiology, Pathology, Paramedical and Pharmacology.

For NMCH departments: Anesthesiology, Dermatology and Venereology, Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine, ENT, General Medicine, General Surgery, Nuclear Medicine, Ophthalmology, Orthopedics, Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, Plastic Surgery, Psychiatry, Radio-Diagnosis, Radiotherapy, Transfusion Medicine & Immunonemalogy.

Under IMCH the departments are Obstetrics, Gynecology, Pediatrics, and Pediatric Surgery.

Super Specialty departments are Cardiology, Cardiothoracic, Genitourology, Nephrology, Neurology, Neurosurgery and Surgical Gastroenterology.

The hospital runs educational institutions to impart knowledge and training in Nursing, Physiotherapy, Paramedical Sciences and Radiological Techniques, to build an efficient workforce of healthcare professionals, to adequately handle the global requirements of medical and surgical emergencies.

Hostels & Accommodation

The college has its own well-furnished hostel inside the campus for both boys and girls and the faculty. The College has also sports facilities for the students.
