Tamil Nadu Fisheries University, Nagapattinam was started in the year 2012. It is run under the Tamil Nadu Fisheries University Act, 2012. It has three constituent colleges. It is one among the Top 10 Universities for Agricultural Science. It is best imparting education for enhancing fish production in the state and the country. It’s a State-funded University in India to provide best education in the branch of fisheries studies.
It is developing the professional skills of the students by offering professional education, research, and proper training. The main aim of the University is to impart skill-based and need-based professional education in different branches of Fisheries Sciences. A number of course programs are offered by the college through best innovative and unique programs. The main mission of the University is to provide Para-Professional Fisheries education to the needy fisherfolk, fish farmers, unemployed youth in the state to enhance entrepreneurial profesional skill in the Fisheries sector.
It enabling good development in the fisheries sector in the State through several extensive training programs. They cover all aspects that is including the answer to farmer’s queries, which organizes mass awareness programmes, fish farmers’ meet, Industry-Institute meets and Exhibitions. It has also collaborated with Auburn University, for research in several fields of fisheries and to have staff members and student exchange programmes. Tamil Nadu Fisheries University Admissions process is not complicated, however, few of the criteria have to be satisfied by the students.

The main is to cater to the needs of the students and the staff members, Tamil Nadu Dr. J. Jayalalithaa Fisheries University offers a wide array of facilities. These include:
Labs: The Fisheries University has modern and well equipped labs. Each lab has the well developed latest technology and advanced machinery for research facilities. Labs are offered for microbiology, aquaculture, processing, aquatic animal health management and extension, aquaculture engineering and computers.
Sports: Sports facilities are available like separate well designed grounds for basketball, badminton, football, volleyball, cricket,shuttle, athletics are made available for the young students at the campus. Well Equipment is also offered for cricket, shuttle, table tennis, volleyball and other indoor games.
Library: An fully air conditioned library with all the books that a student or a teacher would need is available at the campus.
Hostels: Hostels are offered for boys and girls. The mess is run on a dividing system.
