Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology, Thiruvananthapuram was established in 2007 and it is declared Deemed to be University from the University Grants Commission [UGC]. It is an autonomous body which is under the Department of Space, Government of India. The institute’s first chancellor was Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam. This institute was formed with the idea of producing high-quality manpower for the Indian Space Research Organization [ISRO].The Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology is offering high quality of education at undergraduate, graduate, doctoral and postdoctoral levels on areas with special focus to space sciences, space technology, and space applications.
The institution has a mission of creating a unique learning environment enriched by the challenges of Space exploration, by nurturing the innovation and creativity. In 2017, IIST was ranked 28th place, among all engineering institutions, 35th among all universities, and 56th overall in the second NIRF ranking, by MHRD. It is a fully residential campus, that has around 560 undergraduate students, 160 M.Tech and MSc. students, and over 100 PhD scholars. It is located at Valiamala, about 25 kilometres from Thiruvananthapuram city, on the way of famous hill resort of Ponmudi. It has two campuses planned spread over an area of 100 acres situated close to foothills of Sahyadri Mountain Range.

IIST is not only a premier institute but it also offers a wide range of requisite facilities for the students that make the institute a far better than others. Few of these are the following-
Infrastructure
The main campus at Valiamala houses the academic area, laboratories, library and information blocks, computer center, administrative area, convocation area, residential area, students’ activity center, and a sports complex.
Library
The operations of the library are fully computerized and the (OPAC) is accessible from anywhere on the campus on a 24X7 basis.
E-resources deployed in the campus-wide network contains more than over 3000 e-journals, hundreds of conference papers, standards, etc.

There are good computing facilities that have been offered for the students:
Sports Facilities
The Sport’s Club organizes interesting and exciting leagues such as IIST Cricket League. The Badminton Club is also there. Students can also play football and basketball.
Health Facilities
There is a best provision of a clinic and IIST has ensured emergency medical care and hospitalization for all its students by providing into a Memorandum of Understanding with M/s Ananthapuri Health Services.
Other Facilities
Besides all these facilities few of the other facilities include- Guest House, Studio, Bank and Post Office, Open Air Theatre, Convocation Complex.
